“What are you talking about? Everyone understands that the number of followers needs to be increased by any means, and you are talking about removal.” Alas, yes. You need to “clean” followers regularly.
I’ll say right away: if you run Instagram “just for fun”, then don’t waste time reading. If you’re interested in digging into algorithms, I’m glad you’re here.
As always: first a little theory, then move on to practice.
So, if someone thinks that the main thing on an Instagram business page is the number of followers, getting them by all possible methods and don’t care what kind of accounts they are, then I will disappoint you: this is a road to nowhere.
In social networks, there is the concept of ER (Engagement Rate) – this is an indicator of engagement on a page or under a specific post. There are many of them, I will consider one.
How is ER calculated for a specific Instagram post?
ER = (likes + comments + shares + saves) / number of followers * 100%
Now imagine you have 3000 followers. 7 people liked the post, did not comment, did not share. 4 people saved the post. Calculate the percentage of engagement under the post.
ER = (7 + 0 + 4) / 3000 * 100% = 0.36%
When calculating the cumulative ER for several posts or for a certain period:
ER = (all likes + all comments + all shares+ all saves) / number of followers (at the time of counting) * 100%
Well, ok, I have a low ER (less than 1%), but what’s wrong?
There seems to be a lot of followers, but there is no reach and engagement.
Usually in such accounts there are 2 problems: content and quality of the audience.
- We’ll talk about content another time. Here and without me you know how to attract a follower. If you still want to discuss – write in the comments, I will prepare another article.
- The audience. What is wrong with it? Not active, you say. Why don’t followers like and comment? Because they don’t see posts. And the fewer followers engage with your post, the fewer followers Instagram will show the publication. The vicious circle turns out.

“Does not like”, “Does not read”, “Does not save”, “Does not comment”, “Does not share”
Because of this, the ER score is low. Why is it not good:
Firstly, an Instagram page with a low ER is not credible.
Secondly, when searching for keywords, on the first places will be those accounts in which the total ER is higher. The number of followers on such pages may be less than those of big competitors. On August 25, 2021, Instagram wrote about this in an article about keywords search.
Ok, but why remove followers?
We got to the most interesting part.
Let’s check who follows the profile. How do you like the followers who follow 2000 profiles and which 3000? And 5000? Everyone has seen these. But if not, here are some examples:

Now answer the question: will such followers see all the content?
If someone tries to prove otherwise, then look at the number of your following. Do you keep track of all the news?
But it’s so important that followers see the posts and interact…

ER over 20% in business accounts is, of course, ironic! But you can get close to 7%.
What metrics should you strive for?
There is an opinion:
less than 1% is a bad indicator;
from 1% to 3.5% – the average;
from 3.5% to 6% – an indicator above the average;
over 6% is a high rate.
My practice shows that this happens in “store” accounts. If without cheats, giveaways, like-chats and other nonsense. Write in the comments if you have a different experience, preferably with examples. It will be interesting to read.
So, let’s get back to the idea that you need to get rid of “insta-dead souls”.
They will pull accounts to the bottom every day. And profile owners puzzle over why the account has low activity, deplorable reach.
Well, there can’t be only good followers, can they? Will there always be these?
Yes. And that’s okay. The percentage of low-quality audience should not exceed 10%. And the Instagram profile will take a deep breath.
But if the percentage of mass followers among followers has already approached 30%, we will not see activity, as well as reaching the top in hashtags and high reach.
Mass followers lead to the situation described in the diagram above. They do not see the posts (naturally, among thousands of following!), thereby killing your reach, ER and the page as a whole.
You can spend money on content managers and copywriters, publish interesting posts, but the activity in your account will still break through the bottom every day.
How to define such an audience?
Manually. For example, alternately entering alphabetical letters or numbers into the search on your followers page. A and check all the followers, B, C, and so on.
In the 21st century of information technology, doing something manually sounds archaic. Nevertheless, this option cannot be omitted. While removing bots manually, you will be attentive and diligent. This is in your interest to do this task with high quality, isn’t it?
The more followers you have, the more energy- and time-consuming process you will face. But don’t be alarmed ahead of time. You will make it little by little.
The cleaning process is as follows:
1.Open the list of your followers and take a close look at each profile without an adequate nickname and photo.
2. As soon as you find a fake account or bot, say goodbye to it by clicking on the “Remove” button right within the list of your followers. You can also do the same action in bot’s account. Click on the three horizontal dots in the upper right corner and choose “Remove” or “Block”. The latter option is when you don’t want this bot to come back to your account again.
3. Also, pay attention to spammers. If you come across some stupid comments that have been recently left under your posts, add their authors to the blacklist clicking on the “Block” button.
Please note: using the manual method, it is important to carefully check each dubious account. If there are some posts in their profiles, have a look at the date when the last one was published. If it dates 2018 or even 2020, remove such a follower mercilessly.
And if you are a member of the Secret Hashtags Club, we have launched a new service especially for you.
Going through the list of your followers and checking them manually take hell a lot of time. Time that you can spend doing more important things.

This is why, our Hashtag Elf Lucy, will take care of it for you. She will go through your followers and create 3 excel file.

After the payment Lucy will send you email and ask which Instagram account to check.
In parallel with the cleaning, it would be good to organize the traffic of a new audience. Set up ads, pay for integrations with bloggers. Ideal: how many new followers came, the same number of “dead souls” need to be removed.
And implement engaging content. At least posts and stories with games. During the cleaning period is especially important.
After cleaning, a second technical analysis is needed. The percentage of low-quality audience should not exceed 10%. If the activity does not grow, then my advice to you is to work harder on the quality of the content.
Keep in mind: one of the top mistakes while cleansing is removing a lot of bots at a time. It usually leads to a drop in organic reach and worsening of ER. Sharp swings never do any good. Do it step by step, removing 10-15 bots per day.
